Today in history.
I helped to insert a catheter (a tube inserted into the patient's urinary bladder via the urethra to allow drainage of urine) into a 70++ y/o man who is dying of a brain disease in ICU . Special thanks to Dr. F for giving me such an opportunity. However, a staff nurse made me feel soooo irritated!
1) Dr F dropped a cotton used to clean the patient's penis on the floor, I was at the other side of the bed, when the nurse saw Dr. F bended to pick it up, the nurse said I should've picked it up for him as the doc has to be extra sterile, that's why he needs someone to assist him during the procedure, to handle such things etc etc. I didn't know ok, but fine.
2) After I helped him to insert the tube and attached the other end to a container, he said just put the container down, on the floor. I did according to what he said. Apparently, he forgot to attach a bag at the bottom of the container, so the urine leaked onto the floor. Then saya yg kena marah dgn nurse tu, eeiiii geramnya!!! She said, "this box should be sterile, you shouldn't have put it on the floor, and it's leaking on the floor because you didn't attach the bag underneath the container. I'm not being cheeky or anything, but this is a common sense blablabla..". For God sake, I'm just a third year med student okay! I just followed what the doc asked me to do, I've never done catheterization before, plus I've never even seen all the instruments before, it's all new to me, we haven't learnt about the procedure yet!!!!! MARAH ni!!!
3) Just after she cleaned up the urine on the floor and about to leave the room, there she was again, saying "talk to the patient about anything while you're doing it". Eeii, bisinglah makcik ni!! I usually talk to patients. But that patient was really unwell, other than asking whether he feels any pain, he seemed tired and ill, I don't wanna trouble him with anything unnecessary. Tingginya lar tahap kesabaran saya menahan marah and maintain the fake smile on my face sepanjang masa tu, grrr!
When the nurse left the room, I took a deep breath in, and Dr F told me to relax and jgn terasa dgn nurse tu, diorg dah biasa kena sound dgn nurse2, esp yg kerja kat ICU, lagi teruk diorg kena. I said, even so, that doesn't give them the right to sesuka ati nak sound org camtu, ckp elok2 x boleh ke? Show good manners la sket kat student. and Dr F just laughed while I still bising2 kutuk that nurse.
Right after that, he brought me to see another patient to insert a cannula for IV line. It was difficult to find the patient's vein but he managed to locate it and the patient praised Dr. F, saying that all others failed to find her veins like so many times, and also for the fact that Dr F was being good and gentle to her.
I learned alot from Dr F today, I'm very grateful for that. So far, I like the patients (and the place itself) in Bon Secours Hosp, they are all very nice and willing to give full cooperation even though they are not well.
