Bye Bons..

Tomorrow will be my last day of rotation in Bon Secours Hospital for this term. Everything was great, except for the fact that we've never even once, met our surgeon that we're attached to, coz apparently he seemed very, very busy and I find it really disappointing. For me la kan, if busy terlampau camtu, x perlu la kot get involved with the med school to teach student. And although the cases that I got here were not as interesting as those I've got in CUH, I'd say the patients are nicer and easier to deal with in Bons. For the purpose of studying, CUH might be a better place to learn more, while Bons is a better place to work at.

Some of the patients that I found quite interesting;

Week 1

Me: Have you ever had chest pain in the past?
Mrs H: No no, no pain.
Me: Not currently, but in the past, maybe few years ago?
Mrs H: Yes, no chest pain. (confident)
Me: Are you sure? Not even once?
Mrs H: (thinking for a while) No
Me: But you said you had two bypass surgeries few years back. (pointing at the huge surgical scar on her chest)
Mrs H: Owhhh yea, now I remember, there were few times back then when I had chest pain, before the surgeries.

Week 2

Me: (asking about family history)
Mrs C: My sister had this disease, now I don't remember what's the name, but i think it starts with a C.
Me: Crohn's Disease? COPD? Cushing's? Etc etc...
Mrs C: No, no. Owh I can't seem to remember, but she was allergic to flower.
Me: Anaphylaxis, Type 1 Hypersensitivity? Asthma maybe?
Mrs C: No, it's something else. She couldn't eat the 'flower' used to bake cakes.
Me: Owhhh, flour (ingatkan flower, haha). Coeliac disease?
Mrs C: Yes, coeliac. My son has it too.

Week 3

Me: Do you have any medical/surgical history in the past?
Mr M: No.
Me: Ever had any health problem, any disease or illness before?
Mr M: No, I've always been healthy.
Me: Ok, so this is your first time being in a hospital?
Mr M: Well, I've been to hospital for quite a number of times before. I had my tonsils removed about 30 years ago, inguinal hernia few years ago, gout, mild arthritis, hypertension etc etc..

*************************

So, I suppose that explains why the entire process of getting history only, took almost an hour at this stage, not to mention physical examination.
